We came across a great article in the January 2016 issue of Woodshop News, Dust is the Devil, written by John English.
John does a great job covering the reasons why dust is dangerous and otherwise harmful, and how to prevent or mitigate dust issues. Other useful sources of information include the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Work Safe BC, a Canadian Organization.
“Migrant” or “fugitive” dust – dust that isn’t adequately removed from its place of origin that can move through the shop – is harmful for everything from employee health to finish quality, and can ultimately pose fire or explosion hazards.
“The only ways to eliminate [migrant dust] – or at least reduce it to harmless inconsequential levels”, writes John, “are to gather it at its source and perform routine cleaning.”
Ultimately, John highly recommends engaging an expert: “No two shops are identical, so every dust collection system is actually a custom design.” Other keys to dealing with dust successfully include implementing good processes and practices, automation, and staying informed.
